We're in Together now — the last of the five words we set out with back in June. Play. Explore. Laugh. Discover. Together. When we planned The Best Summer Ever, each word had its place on the calendar. We knew we'd eventually arrive here. What we couldn't have known was how much Together would already be woven through everything that came before it. And somehow, nearly two weeks into August, we've completed exactly one new adventure. Kylo's Birthday. To be fair, we've been celebrating that birthday for all it's worth. 😂
One Adventure. So Many Moments. 🎂
Kylo's birthday was technically one Storybook. It certainly didn't feel like one. The surprise itself had been building long before his birthday arrived. Roxy had been planning, saving, and finding ways to make his celebration special. And when the big day finally came, friends from different parts of their world showed up to celebrate with him. There was frisbee and a piñata. Cake and presents. Dancing and laughter. A thank-you between best friends. And one very full group photo. Then we kept going.
We revisited individual moments from the celebration. Animated scenes got their own chance to come alive. We pulled the day together into a celebration montage. Roxy and Kylo relived it on the Barkast. And we kept finding little pieces of the adventure that felt worth sharing on their own. We have, in other words, thoroughly celebrated Kylo's birthday. 😂
But somewhere in all that birthday content was another discovery. Earlier this summer, we were moving quickly from one adventure to another. August has looked almost like the opposite: One adventure. So many moments. Maybe an experience doesn't have to disappear just because we've turned the last page.
We Finally Arrived at Together 🐾
The funny thing about reaching Together is realizing we didn't have to wait until August to find it. It had been there all along. It was there when neighbors gathered for Block Party. It was there when teammates learned to work together on Soccer Day. It was there when Roxy chose Museum Day because she knew how much Kylo would love seeing the sharks. It was even there during Binge Watch Day, when enjoying what mattered meant doing less and simply making time to be together. And Kylo's birthday brought so many of those threads into one place.
Friends showed up. Some were faces we'd met during this summer. Others were familiar faces who have been part of Roxy and Kylo's world much longer. They weren't there because they all wanted to do the same activity. They were there for Kylo. Maybe that's what Together has been trying to show us all along. It's not just about doing things together. It's about showing up for one another.
Five Words Became Something Bigger
Looking back at where this started — five words on a planning grid and an ambitious list of summer adventures — it's almost funny how simple the original plan looks now. We wanted Roxy and Kylo to Play, Explore, Laugh, Discover, and spend time Together.
We wanted different kinds of experiences: water, movement, food, learning and discovery. We wanted them to really experience those moments — to see, hear, smell, taste, touch and feel summer instead of simply watching it go by. And underneath the activities, we wanted the stories to leave room for something deeper: opportunities to explore who we're becoming, how we connect and belong, what gives us direction and purpose, and how we might make a difference.
Those intentions haven't changed. But almost everything around them has grown.
We Built Things We Didn't Know We'd Need
We started summer with Storybooks and teasers. Then an AI inconsistency gave us an idea. What if Roxy and Kylo could talk about the things that went wrong? That became the Barkast — and suddenly they had voices beyond the Storybook. The Barkast developed its own pieces. The questions we asked the Pack became more intentional. We started thinking about what happened before, during and after someone experienced a story.
We became more deliberate about What Mattered. We paid more attention to recurring characters, relationships and the world Roxy and Kylo were building around themselves. One idea kept revealing another. What began as a summer campaign was becoming a way to experience a story, tell it, talk about it, reflect on it, and invite someone else to find something of their own inside it.
We didn't map all of that out in June. We discovered it by doing the work.
And the Work Got Bigger, Too
There's another part of this story that isn't quite as poetic. 😂 We started The Best Summer Ever hoping to reach 40 adventures. In June, we created 12 Storybooks. In July, we created eight. So far in August, we've created one. We haven't run out of adventures. The adventures have gotten bigger.
A new story can now mean teasers, a Storybook, questions, Barkast pieces, reminders, announcements, snippets, animation, social content and whatever other idea we inevitably think of halfway through making it. Kylo's Birthday may be the clearest example yet. One story gave us more ways to tell, revisit and experience it than we'd imagined when summer began. That's exciting. It's also showing us something we probably needed to learn: More doesn't always have to mean more stories.
Sometimes it might mean finding more inside a story worth telling.
The Summer We Actually Had ☀️
We're not done yet. There are still adventures we want Roxy and Kylo to have before The Best Summer Ever comes to an end. But we're close enough now to look backward and begin seeing the shape of the whole summer instead of only the adventure directly in front of us. And it doesn't look exactly like the planning grid we started with. That's okay. Because the point was never supposed to be checking 40 boxes. The point was to Enjoy What Matters — One Moment at a Time.
Maybe part of enjoying what matters is being willing to notice when the thing you're creating is teaching you something you didn't expect. And maybe Together is the perfect place to be learning that. Because after all the playing, exploring, laughing and discovering we've done this summer, the thing that keeps showing up isn't an activity at all. It's the people — and pups — who were there for it. We're not finished yet.
When the last adventure wraps, we'll write the real closing reflection — not just a recap of what happened, but what this summer actually meant. For now, this is where we are. Together. ❤️🐾
